When I first became interested in betting on horses it seemed place betting was easy money. How wrong I was proved to be!

I mean let’s say there was a race with 9 horses running and all I had to do was pick one to come in the first three. All I had to do was pick the fastest, the one proven to be a winner and I had a guaranteed bet – right? The trouble is of course the odds offered would be stupidly low and on the odd occasion the ‘dead cert’ horse let me down I’d consistently lose. I could try to use a staking system, ‘doubling up’ on every loser… but again eventually that run of losers would wipe me out.

The advent of Betfair changed all that of course. Now we could lay horses just like the bookies. And as the markets expanded we could look at laying places and develop a place laying system.

Over the years I’ve dabbled in this area and had some success but it was recently a combination of ideas which led me to develop the Optima Lays place laying system.
